Hoult Session #1: Getting Your Idea Out There

We are pleased to announce the first in a new Northern Film & Media events strand: the Hoult Sessions. Shepherded by our new digital maestro Ewan McIntosh, each session will see an expert in her or his part of the digital world visiting our Hoults Yard base in Newcastle to share their experience. The first Hoult Session will feature Mike Coulter, founder of digitalagency.com and takes place on 24 February.


If you have to promote yourself, your idea, and your business you'll need to understand the old-rules of brand building (and how to break them), plus the new ones (and how to embrace them.)

This workshop will not only help you figure out what you should be doing and why, it'll also give you a shopping-list of best-practice to take away with you. You'll leave with a clear picture of how to engage in social media, using the key tools, building networks and extending the reach of your idea and brand.

We'll look in outline at traditional marketing and branding tools and opportunities, but spend more time exploring the new web based tools and skills. With plenty of hands on demos and case-studies. And a focus on building fans, ambassadors and communities around your idea/brand.

You'll leave with a fuller understanding of just how valuable these new technologies are, and hopefully an enthusiasm for integrating them into the success of your idea and brand.

Mike Coulter worked in advertising for over 20 years, building (and occasionally dismantling) brands.

In 1997 he discovered the internet, and set up digitalagency.com to play his part in the digital revolution.

His first blog posts, tweets and flickr uploads where in 2006, an activity he's as passionate about today, as he was then. (Some would say more so.)

From February 2010, Northern Film and Media begins a monthly series of workshops and seminars covering the diaspora of digital media, based in their studios at Hoults Yard. The Hoult Sessions will cover the nuts and bolts of digital marketing and raising your online profile, to seeing how some of Britain's top designers are transforming the digital to the real world, understanding how digital media startups have dealt with failure to become giants, and learning the pitfalls of mobile and social games development.

The sessions are designed to respond to the needs of the North East digital media and wider creative industries, so if you have an idea for a workshop or know want to better understand a particular area of development, get in touch.
