Sound & Vision Commissions Announced

Thursday 23rd October, 2008

This year’s commission winners in the Sound & Vision scheme have been announced. The £10,000 scheme, run in partnership between Northern Film & Media, Generator North East and Arts Council England, North East, with the aim of bringing the two creative worlds of film and music together, will see north east filmmakers work with North East musicians to produce seven original one minute films stimulated by a set piece of music.

This year’s commissions are:

  • ‘My Heart Still Beats the Same’, written by Alex Inskip and to be produced by Zahra Zomorrodian, using Chris Prosho’s piece ‘Nano’
  • ‘Generation’, written by Mark Griffiths and also to be produced by Zahra Zomorrodian, using Paul Liddell’s ‘Gregorians’
  • ‘Blood Drinkers’, written by Lee Hanson and to be produced by Leighton Clark, using Andrew Hodson’s ‘Deadwater’
  • ‘Unravel’, written by Phoebe Quayle and to be produced by Steve Martin, using John-Paul Denton’s ‘Spector’
  • ‘Slow Dance’, written by Franki Appleton and to be produced by Ema Lea, using Gavin McClary’s ‘Nice and Slow’
  • ‘Plunge’, written by Ross Philips, using Steve Jenkins’ ‘Chad Valley’
  • ‘Swimming Pretty – Ode to Esther’, written by Wendy Erikson, using Chris Prosho‘s ‘Nano)’

This year's scheme was launched in July 2008 when 56 musicians each submitted one minute music clips to Generator North East. 10 music clips were chosen and posted up on the Northern Film & Media website in September for film makers to listen to before selecting their favourite clip and submitting their 1 minute film idea.

The seven commissioned Sound & Vision films will shortly be posted on the North East Movies website and the public will be invited to vote for their favourite. A gala screening will take place early next year showcasing the Sound & Vision films made, and the winning musician and filmmaker will be awarded a prize of £3,000 to make a short film together.

This will be the second time that the scheme has run, building on the success of last year’s competition. The seven clips from last year’s competition were used to launch the new North East Movies Website in October 2007, attracting an extraordinary 7000 votes in just over 2 weeks.

Tom Harvey, Chief Executive of Northern Film & Media said: “The Sound & Vision scheme has proved a huge success. Each of the elements combine to make it a particularly engaging and exciting scheme for everyone involved. Our partnership with Generator North East proved a fine model for partnership work between regional agencies, and it is a partnership, and a scheme, that we have been delighted to develop this year.”
