Friday 22nd January, 2010
A DRAMA filmed in and around the stunning North East coastline has been nominated for a BAFTA, it was announced yesterday.
Filmed in and around Blyth in Northumberland last summer, Jade is a compelling 15-minute drama competing for the prestigious award against five other short films.
Jade is the story of a young girl caught in the dilemma of her own making. It is a gripping film about someone in a difficult situation, who has been tricked by her own feelings and desires and whose options are removed one by one.
Featured as one of Screen International’s ‘Stars of Tomorrow’, Newcastle’s multi-award winning writer and director Daniel Elliott said: “I am absolutely delighted that Jade has been nominated for a BAFTA for Best Short Film. It’s fantastic that it has been recognized by the Academy.”
Produced by Third Films Ltd based in Newcastle, producer Samm Haillay said: “This is wonderful news for Daniel, I’m thrilled that his exceptional talent has been acknowledged. Both Duane Hopkins and myself are proud to have produced Jade and to be producing Daniel’s feature debut. This nomination is great for our company and the North East film industry”
Jade has also been selected for competition and awards in over 70 different International film festivals around the world and has won a string of awards to date including:
Winner – Silver Berlin Bear - 59th Berlin International Film Festival
Winner – Best European Short Film - 30th Villeurbanne International Film Festival
Winner – Best Short Film – 7th Imaginaria International Film Festival
Winner – Jury Prize - 24th Odense International Film Festival
Winner – 2nd Prize Best Short Film - ‘Cellu l'art’ International Film Festival
Winner – Special Mention of the Jury - In The Palace International Film Festival
Winner – Best Cinematography - 7th TOFIFEST International Film Festival
Winner – Best Actress - 7th TOFIFEST International Film Festival
Nominee – Best Short Film - 7th London Short Film Festival
Jade was financed through the UK Film Council’s Digital Shorts Plus scheme and by Northern Film & Media, the Regional Screen Agency for the North East, which has supported/funded each of Daniel’s projects over the past five years.
Chief executive of Northern Film and Media Tom Harvey said: “Short films play such a vital role in the career development of film makers and we have some immense talent in our region as this nomination proves. Northern Film and Media works hard to support that talent and aims to provide help and funding wherever possible. The film stands out as an extremely powerful and vivid piece of cinematic work. Just to be nominated for a BAFTA is a fantastic achievement in itself and we are wishing Samm and Daniel all the luck in the world.”
Third Films’ works have won over 40 awards internationally at many of the most prestigious festivals in Europe, Asia and America. Third’s debut feature film Better Things by Duane Hopkins premiered to widespread critical acclaim as part of the official selection of Critics Week at Cannes International Film Festival in 2008. It has since screened in competition at Edinburgh, Toronto, London and Rotterdam, winning the FIPRESCI Critics Circle prize at Stockholm.
The BAFTA awards take place at London's Royal Opera House on February 21.
