Opportunity for Children’s Writer

The Tyneside Cinema are looking to commission a children’s writer and illustrator to produce three short narratives for an online resource for teachers of children age 7-11. News Real Online will help teachers use newsreels as a learning tool in the classroom.
The successful candidate/s will:
- Write three original short stories, of 800 words maximum each, based on
- information about newsreels provided by the Cinema and his/her/their own
- research
- Each story must have an original narrator-character: a filmmaker, an exhibitor,
- and a cinema-goer.
- Illustrate each story. At least one illustration must be of the narrator.
- Devise a creative writing activity - written for teachers - to accompany each
- narrative to help children to explore the narrators’ newsreel experiences further.
The ideal candidate/s will, therefore, be: ‐ Experienced, published writer/illustrator for young children ‐ Knowledgeable about the KS2 literacy curriculum.
TIME SCALE: February 22 to March 20, 2010
The successful applicant/s will be able to create their own timetable. However, they will be expected to submit a rough draft of the stories by March 15th and final copy by March 20th. Delivery format tbc. This timescale may be negotiated, within reason.
FEE: £3000 (£1000 per story)
If two people are applying as a team, this cost will be split between the writer and
illustrator at their own discretion.

Each person involved in an application must supply:
- CV of appropriate writing and/or illustrating experience
- Cover Letter outlining the interest in the commission
- Two recent examples of work
- Any supporting documentation in support of the application

applicants.
The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 19th February 2010.
The successful applicant will be notified by telephone on February 22nd.
