Tom Marshall

‘Over the Border’ is about an area in Middlesbrough famous in days gone by for its steelworks. It is now a ghost town, with the majority of the community moving on. However along with the rubble and boarded up houses there are still lights on in a small number of houses, people living out their lives as normal, refusing to move and it is these characters Tom will be featuring. Tom plans to shoot the film in a very cinematic way, using cranes and dollies to fully capture this area before it disappears.

I started to make films in college while on a media studies course. Our first practical piece of work was to shoot a chase scene, so me and my mates just had a bit of a muck around and made this cheesy cop film called ‘BJ &Clyde’. That night I took it round my brothers house to edit, and was blown away by what he could do with the dodgy footage we had filmed. From that moment on I was hooked and have been making my own short films consistently ever since. I then went on to study TV and Film Production at Cleveland College of Art and Design then Teesside University after that.

Successes so far include my films ‘Daddy’s Girl’ being short listed for the BBC New Talent Award 2006, ‘bigboy_74’ winning the BBC New Talent Award 2007 as well as other awards abroad including ‘best film’ at Milwaukee short film festival and also ‘My Friend Michael Sniff’ winning the City in Motion Award 2008.
